now I really want to get back into glitch art.

I started experimenting with glitch art after discovering the glitch art subreddit in the early 2010’s when I was working towards my BFA in college. My favorite method of glitching images was with Audacity. I would import the image as raw data and’s the picture would show up in the software as if it was an audio track. I would then use the programs native audio effects like echo, reverb, etc. to manipulate the audio track and then save the output in an image format to see the results. I’m surprised I didn’t continue with this medium, it’s an interesting sort of ‘off-label’ usage of open source technology to manipulate digital data in an unpredictable way, especially at the current junction of art and AI. I’m becoming really intrigued by this medium again. It’s got this inherently digital aesthetic and unpredictability that I hypothesize can’t quite be replicated by generative AI. It’s also a contrast to my own personal mission of digital preservation, the intentional corruption of files to create something new. The image above was created using “pixel sorting”. I never dabbled in pixel sorting previously, but theres CLI tools and web apps that do it nicely. Its quite fun to experiment with sorting methods and parameters. With some masking in Gimp or whatever you choose I combine the original image based in reality with one digitally corrupted and it provides a fascinating contrast, I think. I may work up a how-to in the Development Tank after some more experimentation, please stay tuned!
