Recent house projects
Ah the seasonal hobby change has taken hold. I’m starting to notice patterns of how and when I shift hobbies and hyperfixations. My undiagnosed ADHD has finally decided it’s now time to work on house stuff instead of Linux stuff.
I spent most of late November to mid-January diving deep once again into Linux system administration and devops type stuff with my homelab, and started a NAS build. I can tell by my yearly GitHub commit history this is around the time I usually do such things. These sorts of spurts only last a few months though before I move onto a different to do list.

I finally hung the hardware and brackets for a much anticipated bookshelf envisioned by my uncle who is also this genius designer who has been integral to the interior design of our house. My wife and I originally had our books mostly tucked away upstairs on $25 IKEA Laiva bookshelves but after buying some 2x12s, cutting, sanding, torching, staining, and waxing them, I finally executed his vision and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Our books are now the heart of our home and the library is already full.

I’m currently in the middle of the next project where I’m taking apart my kitchen. There was originally one long counter with an awkward gap underneath between two cabinets. This caused the fridge to be shoved to the side in an awkward place that didn’t lead to a very pleasing interior space. We found cabinets marked down from $100 to $25 at Lowe’s and while they’re not the most robust cabinetry, they were easy to build, easy to paint and look really nice in the space on either side of the fridge. I normally stray away from symmetry in my own art but in interior design it seems to be a really safe bet.

There’s still so much painting to do, shelving to install, and lighting to choose. So stay tuned!
